Over the past two years artists Gavin Jantjes and Dag Erik Elgin have had an ongoing conversation about painting. On October 18th this conversation will take place in Oslo Kunstforening's sofa.
In Oslo as well as abroad, Gavin Jantjes is known to most as the former senior curator for international art at the National Museum in Oslo or the former artistic director of Henie Onstad Art Center. Jantjes has been a key opinion former and contributor to the contemporary art scene in Norway. His love for painting made him curate An Appetite for Painting, his final exhibition for the National Museum in 2014. The research undertaken for this exhibition paved the way for his return to the studio and the daily practice of painting.
Dag Erik Elgin works within an ongoing research of the history of painting in the conjunction between modernist ideals and contemporary visual expressions. His work is based on painting as a daily practice and tool for historical analysis where text production is included as a main component. Recent exhibitions include: La Collection Moderne, Museum Kunst der Westküste, Föhr 2018, Mirror falling from the Wall, Galleri Opdahl, Stavanger 2017, The Armory Show, New York 2017, Originals Grisaille, OSL contemporary 2016, Expanding Frontiers, Fondation Hippocréne, Paris 2016, In search of Matisse, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter (HOK) 2015, Black Mountain-An interdisciplinary Experiment, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin 2015. Elgin was awarded the Carnegie Art Award 2014 and was a professor at the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo 2010-2016.
